Is Taylor Swift really in her trad wife era?

With marriage on the horizon, what is Taylor Swift's aspirational brand selling now?

As summer fades into fall, Taylor Swift has been busy setting the scene for her next era: marriage and kids with NFL player Travis Kelce. Her new most-liked Instagram post of all time is his proposal, set to “So High School,” the first song she wrote about him. On her new album The Life of a Showgirl, she explains that she was languishing before Kelce rescued her and made her biggest dreams come true.

“And if you’d never come for me, I might’ve drowned in the melancholy,” she sings, before pledging allegiance to his hands, team, and vibes. Later, she promises to never break their vows, then fantasizes about settling down in the suburbs to raise a couple little Kelces. And forget performing the Super Bowl halftime show. On Monday, Swift told Jimmy Fallon that Kelce had a “very dangerous, very high-pressure, high-intensity” job to do on that field, and she needed to pay attention to him instead of performing her silly little choreo.

Give me a break. It’s jarring to hear this from the woman who, at just 18, penned the lyrics, “In your life you’ll do things greater than dating the boy on the football team.” Swift helped inspire me and a whole generation of girls to value our potential for success more than our potential for marriage. And we grew up watching Swift become the most successful of them all. Swift is no “trad wife,” but she’s acting like she is. And the reason why is obvious.
