My friends and I love watching the Oscars, and every year we guess the winners. Usually, I guess who I want to win. I always lose by a lot. This year, I Googled who would win. It’s other people’s jobs to figure out what is most likely to win. So this year, I sat back and watched as the most-predicted winners won most of the awards. My score was definitely better, but several times I wished I had been wrong.

This year’s Oscars understandably felt subdued. It’s a pretty terrible time in the world. But watching the discourse around the winners unfurl today, what stuck out to me the most was what people didn’t seem to have a problem with.
